What is website hosting?

Think of website hosting as a place to store your website to make it available to everyone on the internet. These are companies that have many file servers (computers) to store all the information for your website and many others.

In addition to a web host, you will need a domain name.  This can be your own name based on your website content such as yourcompany.com, or a subdomain which is just someone else with a domain name that is leasing you some of their available space.  Subdomain names are based on the original domain name or top level domain (TLD) preceded by the name of your company or website, such as yourcompany.phpwebscripting.com.

Fees.

The big question everyone asks is, "What is it going to cost me?".  The fees for these services vary between companies.  The fees for these services are on top of what PHP Web Scripting charges for the creation of the web page content.

Most companies offer plans starting from 1 month to 3 years.  Most, if not all, companies have a tiered structure to their web hosting plans.  Basically, the more you pay for up front, the cheaper the monthly cost.  Most companies have introductory rates to their plans for new customers.  After the intruductory period, there is a slight increase to the monthly fee.

The fees for domain names are typically billed on a yearly basis.  The fee for a domain name is usually between $10 and $15 for most companies, though some hosting plans offer this for free.

Other service fees can be charged for things such as SSL (secure data communications), dedicated IP addresses, and other things.  These services are not always needed and are not typically used for basic websites.
