SEO, what it is and how it's used

Just what is SEO?  SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.  SEO is the process of improving the ranking of your website given by search engines by the effective use ofHTML tags and information.  Improving this rank or score increases the chance that your website will be closer to the top of the search results when vilitors search for your product, service or information.  All search engines do is try to figure out how relevant your websites information is to what people are searching for.

Search engines these days are much different from the search engines of the early days of the internet.  They use search bots aka web crawlers that use highly complex algorithms to rank the pages of your website.  These bots crawl your site on a daily basis to gather information about your website to keep up with the changing information of your site.  Knowing what information on your site to tweak can get you higher rankings with a search engine, but the modern day search engines look at a lot of criteria to judge your site.  Early day search engines generally relied merely on the repetitive use of keywords as their ranking factor.  Webmasters quickly caught on to this and flooded their sites with any keywords  they could to give themselves a higher rank on the search engines.  This led to many of the search engines returning results for information that wasn't even relative to what the person was searching for.

The three major search engines that webmasters optimize for are Google, Yahoo and Bing.  Each search engine has their own algorithms that are used to rank your site, so your site may get a higher position on the search list for one site, and a much lower position on another.  Some of the search engines still rely on keywords as part of their ranking algorithm, but it is not the only thing the algorithm uses to rank a site.

Search engine optimization can be a tough task.  PHP Web Scripting can help with the SEO on your site by analyzing for the things that can get your site ranking higher on the search engines.
